multiple 1st-place championships in weapons, fighting, and forms competition, but was unable to attend any competitive circuit due to finances.  He focused instead on training up the next generation.

At fifteen he was in charge of a martial arts school of twenty Chinese kids at the Tallahassee Chinese School; this initial interest in sharing his experience would grow into an undying love for teaching.  In 1992 he graduated 3rd in his class, attended FSU, and, at twenty-one, married Allison Carrozza.  Shortly after, he moved to Philadelphia to open his own martial arts studio, Life Arts Karate Concepts, and enter graduate school at Temple University.  After a year of course work Sensei Michael transferred to Arcadia University where he earned his M.Ed. in 1999 and his Secondary School Teacher Certification.  The martial arts, however, remained an undeniable passion.

In the Fall of 1997, he was honored as a guest instructor at the Northwest Training Camp in Seattle, Washington, and in June of 1999 he flew to San Diego, CA for advanced training and to test for his 2nd Degree Black Belt, which he received on June 26, 1999.  With the birth of their daughter Rachel in 2001, he and his wife returned to Florida where he earned his 3rd Degree Black Belt in 2006.  Most recently, Sensei Michael attended the 2006 CNOMAA International Training Camp, where he taught Advanced Kicking:  Spinning, Jumping, Flying.  He now resides in Lake Mary with his family, Allison, Rachel, and their new son, Brandon.

In Sensei Michael’s Words:

“As a young kid, raised by a single parent, I know the struggles faced by the children of divorce.  I know what is lacking and what is needed.  Also, as an educator, I have seen firsthand what happens to kids who have found no role model, have lost their self-esteem, have no outlet for frustration, and have no passion to live for.  I discovered the martial arts at age thirteen, and have considered it to be my second father.  Hero Academy is that father to many today.  Through dedication to the improvement of self and others, we have witnessed personal successes as well as community successes.  Students have become leaders among their peers where they were once shy and withdrawn.  Martial arts is the environment through which the body is strengthened, the passions of artistry and creativity are emboldened, and the heart is girded with compassion and love.  Students care about one another and they earnestly desire each other's success.  These are all products that evolve from the thoughtful structure, curriculum, students and instructors at Hero Academy. “

Sensei Michael grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, the younger of two brothers.  In February of 1987, as a present for his thirteenth birthday, his mother enrolled him in a martial arts club at Florida State University.  He soon discovered a love for martial arts, and for the next ten years he trained fanatically in Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts at the Bamboo Dojo under Sensei Vu Trinh, martial arts master, father-figure, and mentor.  During this time Sensei Michael became an avid tournament competitor, gaining

Sensei Kenric Lai

Sensei Kenric Lai grew up in South Florida.  Being an overweight and asthmatic child, his mother thought it would be good for him to study the martial arts.  At the age of 10 and against his will, he started practicing USA Goju.  The importance of this practice was not apparent to him until his later years.  Still, he was able to place third in forms during his only competition while practicing Goju.  After several years of practicing and protesting, he was able to leave Goju only to be unexpectedly bitten by the fitness bug.

Around the age of 16, the effects of the martial arts training had worn off.  He was tired of being weak and overweight so he started walking around the neighborhood.  Within months, he was jogging around the community.  After a year, he decided it was time to join the high school track team.  Although he never won a race, he never lost his love for running.  During this time, he also discovered weight training and changed his 175 pound frame from flab to muscle.

When he turned 18, he remembered his early days in the martial arts and how it encompassed strength and flexibility.  He decided to return to martial arts, this time of his own recognizance.  Kenric found Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu, a traditional Chinese martial art.  After a year of practice and full contact sparring, he ran out of money.  Now a broke college student, he spent several years searching for a viable alternative.  One day, he noticed a flyer about a martial arts club on the university campus.  The thought of practicing an eclectic style such as Cuong Nhu intrigued him, and the open-mindedness of the style convinced him to stay.  During his time at Florida Atlantic University, he earned two master’s degrees (mental health counseling and exercise physiology) and a black belt in Cuong Nhu.  Asthma and the words “I can’t” were no longer in his vocabulary.  He has since assisted and conducted numerous classes and evaluations.  In 2007, he assisted in an inner strength seminar at a regional training camp.  Most recently, he conducted a basic grappling seminar at Hero Academy.  He is currently a Biomedical Technician and resides in Apopka, Florida.

In Sensei Kenric’s words:

“Being an overweight kid, I understand the challenges of today’s unfit children.  Martial arts ties strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness together in a complete package.  We are the products of our thoughts and environment.  Hero Academy can enhance these aforementioned aspects.  Help your child put down the video games and pick up some determination and confidence.  Join us.”

Sensei Mark started training in the martial arts in 1990, while completing his sophomore year in college at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in south Florida. He had always been interested in the martial arts, mainly from watching Bruce Lee and other martial arts movies when he was a teenager! While at FAU, a friend suggested he work out with her martial arts club on campus, Cuong Nhu. He was immediately hooked. He continued working out at FAU until April 1992 when he received his Bachelor of Science degree. After he graduated, he enrolled in an Instructor Development Course to become a SCUBA instructor; SCUBA diving is Sensei Mark’s other passion.

After becoming a SCUBA instructor, he moved to Orlando, Florida and worked in a local dive center. When he left FAU for Orlando, he thought he was leaving Cuong Nhu for a short break, as there was not a Cuong Nhu school in Orlando at that time. The short break turned into 9 years. He returned to FAU in 1993 to obtain a Master’s Degree. While in Orlando, he met the woman that was to become his wife. She moved to Boca Raton and they married in 1993. During his graduate studies he was a teaching assistant and taught marine biology laboratory classes to undergraduate students. He received his Master of Science degree in 1996 and continued teaching diving and managing a dive center. His daughter was born in 1998. At that time, he left the SCUBA industry for a career as a biologist for a consulting firm. He returned to Cuong Nhu in April 2001, received his black belt in 2007, first degree black belt in 2008 and second degree black belt in 2010.  His daughter started training in Cuong Nhu in 2006. He has been teaching both kids and adults since 2006 and has taught classes at the last three Cuong Nhu International Annual Training Camps. He is currently an environmental consultant and resides in Longwood, Florida with his wife Shirley and daughter Cara.

In Sensei Mark’s words:

“I love teaching, whether it is diving, biology classes, martial arts or anything else. I really enjoy it when the student has that “ah-ha” moment where a technique they are working on or a subject they didn’t quite understand finally “clicks.” Teaching martial arts, in particular, is extremely rewarding because it helps students build confidence, gain discipline, increase stamina, and learn self-defense. With Cuong Nhu and Hero Academy in particular, students also develop leadership skills that improve themselves and our community.”

"Our son joined Hero last September.  Since that time, we have seen him become more self confident and focused on everything he does.  He has been challenged to better himself.  We are so glad he has Hero Academy as part of his life.  James absolutely enjoys it!”
