Who We Are

About Hero Academy Martial Arts & Leadership in Longwood , FL

Michael Hornback

Owner and Chief Instructor at Hero Academy Martial Arts & Leadership in Longwood , 3rd Degree Black Belt

At Hero Academy, we know that heroes are truly made, not born. Everyone has the potential to be greater than they were the day before, and we strive to bring out the best in each child, teen, and adult that joins our school.

Hero Academy Martial Arts & Leadership is a family-owned and operated Martial Arts School. We have been sharing the transformative power of the martial arts in Longwood and the surrounding area since 2007. Whether it 's helping a child to stand with confidence in the face of a bully, or walking alongside an adult toward a healthy lifestyle, we help our students overcome obstacles in order to fearlessly and heroically live life to the fullest.

Martial Arts has been positively linked to a child 's success in life. But did you know martial arts strengthens students physically, mentally, and spiritually -- at EVERY age?

Positive. Safe. Clean. Classes for all ages are uplifting and positive! In order to maintain our high training standards, classes are divided by age, are full of motivation, and are held in a super-clean environment. We provide 3 distinctly different classes for 3 distinctly different age groups. Each class has its own curriculum designed to maximize achievement in the areas that count.

  • Little Heroes Program for 4 - 5 year olds
  • Kids Martial Arts - discipline, focus and respect become second-nature here
  • Teen/Adult Martial Arts - practical self-defense, stress relief, and fitness are featured

We bring tons of experience and knowledge to the table...but it doesn 't stop there! Our instructors never stop learning as well. This way, they can teach and motivate while personally connecting with the students. This brings out the best in everyone involved! We just love to see our students grow, and we love to grow with them.

We have a family vibe in our school you 'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere. As soon as you walk in the door, you 'll feel the family atmosphere. We 're talking "bring-a-meal-over-when-you 're-sick " kind of family.

Families work together to succeed here. Moms and dads can be found training with their teens, students root for each other to win, and everyone chips in. Whether it 's to get that perfect roundhouse kick, lose those last 5 pounds, or to get the "A " on the upcoming Physics test, we have each other 's back because we 're family.

No one is out to "one up " the other; we support, encourage, and celebrate the "wins. "

Did we mention how much FUN you 'll have? Classes are dynamic and designed to challenge you! But not in a scary way - our instructors will push you in a positive way to support life-changing success, achievement, and JOY! We lead by example--through quality technique, healthy respect, and personal integrity. We sometimes yell, "It 's hard, but it 's awesome! " because a new day is within everyone 's grasp, and it 's fun pushing through challenges together.

Through our modern teaching strategies, epic motivation and support of classmates and instructors, we help you towards living a heroic life full of wins and successes.

For more details on our unique ways to unleash your inner hero, have the most fun you 've EVER had working out, and get you into that "can do " mind-set just visit our classes page. The "Classes " link in the menu above is where we break down what it is we do in each class and where you can find that super low web-special going on too! Wouldn 't want you to miss out.

Our Owner and Head Instructor bio is below so you can get a feel for the leadership at Hero Academy as well. Looking forward to training with you soon!

Michael Hornback, Owner and Head Instructor of Hero Academy Martial Arts & Leadership in Longwood, FL, has been training in the mixed martial art of Cuong Nhu since 1987. As a child, he was faced with challenges common to many today: school bullying, severe asthma, parents ' divorce, hyperactivity; he also discovered the profound, redemptive effect the martial arts can have on one 's life. In fact, it was through martial arts that he first discovered his gift and passion for teaching.

At fifteen, he was given charge over a Martial Arts class of twenty Chinese children at the Tallahassee Chinese School. It was there he fell in love with teaching, passing on his love of martial artsthis amazing thing that had transformed his own life and gave him the confidence to overcome whatever struggles he faced. He went on to graduate 3rd in his class, earn a full scholarship to University, and marry his sweet heart at age 21.

For the next twenty years, he continued to perfect his art; he went on to earn his Masters Degree in Education, to teach English as a high school teacher, and later, as a college professor.

He has been blessed with the opportunity to teach martial arts around the country, throughout his career. He has taught in Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, Raleigh, Philadelphia, and of course, Central Floridaeverything from "Women 's Reality Self-Defense " to "The Art of Dynamic Performance, " to "Superhero Kicking: How to Save the World. "

Most recently, in 2007, he opened Hero Academy Martial Arts & Leadership, a full-service, family-focused martial arts studio, dedicated to the transformation of individuals through the martial arts.

In Sensei Michael 's Words:

"As a young, goofy kid with asthma, raised by a single parent, I know many of the struggles kids face today. As an educator, I have seen firsthand what happens to kids who have found no role model, have lost their self-esteem, have no outlet for frustration, and have no passion to live for. I was lucky to have discovered the martial arts early, and have considered it to be my second father. Hero Academy is that father to many today.

Through dedication to the improvement of self and others, we have witnessed personal successes as well as community successes. Students have become leaders among their peers where they were once shy and withdrawn. Students care about one another and they earnestly desire each other 's success. These are all products that evolve from the thoughtful structure, curriculum, students and instructors at Hero Academy. I 'm proud of all of our students, their families, and everyone taking on the challenge to become their best. It 's not easy, but it 's worth it! "
